Salon-de-Provence à Les Baux-de-Provence - Via Aurelia Camino

Description

This 30.8 km journey through the heart of Provence leads you from the city of Nostradamus to the medieval eagle's nest of Les Baux. Over approximately 7.5 hours of walking, with 160m of ascent and 200m of descent, the trail snakes through ancient olive groves and the white limestone ridges of the Alpilles. Leaving Salon-de-Provence and its historic Saint-Michel church, you will cross mineral landscapes and plateau paths that resonate with the history of the Way of Arles. The final approach to Les Baux-de-Provence offers a breathtaking spiritual panorama, where the clifftop fortress stands as a sentinel for pilgrims. It is a long, contemplative stretch where the scents of wild thyme and the vast Provencal sky accompany every step.

Difficultés

While the total elevation gain is modest at 160m, the 30.8 km distance makes this a demanding day for the legs. The sun's reflection on the white limestone of the Alpilles, combined with long stretches without shade, can lead to heat exhaustion. There are almost no resupply points or water sources between Salon and Les Baux, requiring full autonomy.

Conseils

Carry at least 3 liters of water and all your food, as the scrubland is very isolated. Ensure you get your credential stamped at the Salon Tourist Office before leaving or at Saint-Vincent church in Les Baux. Upon arrival, the 'Carrières des Lumières' provides a cool, refreshing cultural break from the Mediterranean heat.
