Roquebrune-Cap-Martin à Nice - Via Aurelia Camino

Description

This initial 17.5 km stage, taking about 6 hours to complete, immediately immerses you in the sublime contrast between the Mediterranean and the foothills of the Southern Alps. Starting from the medieval village of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, you will climb towards La Turbie, home to the Trophy of Augustus, a Roman monument marking the symbolic entrance to the ancient Via Aurelia. Along the way, the trail overlooks Monaco and Eze, offering breathtaking panoramas of the coastline and the Chapel of Notre-Dame de Laghet, a major site of regional devotion. The pilgrim then begins a spiritual descent towards Nice through fragrant scrubland and ancient olive groves, with an ascent of 762m and a descent of 846m. Arriving in Nice via Mont Alban provides a stunning view of the Baie des Anges, crowning this day of contemplative walking between azure seas and limestone cliffs.

Difficultés

The effort is consistent from the start with 762m of elevation gain, mainly to reach La Turbie. The paths are sometimes steep and rocky, requiring focus during the 846m descent towards Nice. Sun exposure is high on the ridges, and shaded areas are scarce until you reach the urban outskirts.

Conseils

Don't forget to stamp your credential at the Sainte-Marguerite church in Roquebrune or in La Turbie. Carry at least 2 liters of water, as refill points are scarce between La Turbie and Nice. A visit to the Sanctuary of Laghet, slightly off the main track, is a spiritual detour highly valued by pilgrims.
