Nice à Vence - Via Aurelia Camino

Description

This demanding 29.6 km section leaves the Nice shoreline to climb into the Provençal hinterland, featuring a 1,337m ascent and 1,163m descent for an estimated 9-hour walk. Leaving the Baie des Anges, pilgrims pass through Gairaut and immerse themselves in the limestone landscapes of the Nice hills before reaching the perched village of Aspremont. The Way of St. James then winds through scrubland and ancient olive groves to the village of Saint-Jeannet, famous for its towering 'Baou' cliff. Between sea and mountains, the heritage reveals itself through ancient oratories and Henri Matisse's Rosary Chapel at the entrance to Vence, the city of arts. This transition from urban hustle to the serenity of the Azurean heights invites a deep spiritual introspection.

Difficultés

The effort is significant due to the 1,337m of cumulative elevation gain over the steep slopes leading to Aspremont and the base of the Baous. The stony paths can be slippery, especially on the descent to Saint-Jeannet, and shade is scarce on the exposed ridges. The total length requires excellent physical condition to reach Vence calmly before nightfall.

Conseils

Be sure to refill your water in Aspremont as supplies are limited on the heights. Don't forget to have your credential stamped at the Vence Tourist Office or the Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité Cathedral. A visit to the Matisse Chapel (morning or afternoon depending on hours) is a must for pilgrims' reflection.
