Nice à Saint-Paul-de-Vence - Via Aurelia Camino

Description

This 27.7 km segment starting from the Baie des Anges offers a spectacular transition from the buzz of Nice to the serenity of the Provençal hills, with an estimated walking time of 8.5 hours. After leaving the Promenade des Anglais, the pilgrim faces a demanding terrain with 1,233m of ascent, crossing the Bellet vineyards and the Magnan valley before reaching Saint-Roman-de-Bellet. The path winds along ridges offering panoramic views of the Mercantour mountains and the Mediterranean, passing through Colomars and the charming village of Gattières. Crossing the Var river, the spiritual dimension intensifies as you approach the medieval town of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, a hub of art and history where the ramparts watch over the weary traveler. This challenging yet contemplative journey immerses the hiker in an authentic Provence, far from the coastal bustle.

Difficultés

With 1,233m of elevation gain and 1,164m of loss, this stage is classified as difficult due to its numerous successive climbs and descents ('rollercoaster' profile). The climb from the Var valley towards the inland hills can be taxing under the sun, as shade is scarce on the ridge sections.

Conseils

Be sure to fill your water bottles in Nice or Colomars, as the middle section has very few supply points. Don't forget to get your credential stamped at the church of Saint-Roman-de-Bellet and visit the White Penitents chapel upon arrival.
