This 25.9 km segment, involving a challenging ascent of 1,137m and a descent of 1,108m, takes you from the bustling energy of Nice into the serene hills overlooking the French Riviera. Over approximately 8.5 hours of hiking, the Way of Saint James leads you through the prestigious Bellet vineyards and over the ridges of Saint-Antoine, offering breathtaking views of the Mercantour peaks and the sea. Along the route, pilgrims will discover small vernacular chapels and old boundary stones that mark the historical passage of travelers toward Arles. The spiritual atmosphere is enhanced by the transition from the city’s baroque architecture to the quiet paths of the 'Baous' foothills. Your day ends in Cagnes-sur-Mer, a town defined by its medieval fortress and its artistic heritage linked to Renoir.
The difficulty lies in the cumulative elevation gain of 1,137m over steep, often paved slopes that can be hard on the knees. The 1,108m descent towards the Var valley requires careful footing, especially in heat or wet conditions. There is limited shade and few water points once you leave the residential outskirts of Nice to climb the ridges.
Don't forget to get your credential stamped at the Sainte-Réparate Cathedral in Vieux Nice before starting the climb. Carry at least 2 liters of water, as the ridge sections are exposed and hot even in spring. For a unique experience, stop in the Haut-de-Cagnes village at the end of the day to enjoy the medieval atmosphere away from the modern coast.
