Menton à Èze - Via Aurelia Camino

Description

This inaugural 17.9 km stretch of the Via Aurelia marks the solemn beginning of your pilgrimage, connecting Menton, the city of lemons, to the perched village of Èze. With a positive elevation gain of 953m and a loss of 634m, this 6.5-hour walk immediately immerses you in the verticality of the French Riviera, nestled between the deep blue Mediterranean and the foothills of the Southern Alps. Leaving Menton, the path climbs toward Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, offering bird's-eye views of the ancient border and the Saint-Roch chapel, the traditional protector of pilgrims. The trail winds through Aleppo pines and ancient olive groves, passing through the medieval village of La Turbie where the majestic Trophy of Augustus stands. It is a demanding spiritual and physical ascent that prepares the soul for the long journey westward.

Difficultés

The 953m of elevation gain is concentrated in steep and sometimes rocky climbs, particularly to reach La Turbie, making the stage physically taxing under the sun. There is significant exposure on the Riviera balconies, and the terrain can be slippery on limestone slabs if it has recently rained. This route demands excellent physical fitness from day one.

Conseils

Have your credential stamped right at the start at the Saint-Michel church in Menton. Bring a significant water supply (at least 2 liters), as water points are scarce between Roquebrune and La Turbie. A contemplative break at the Trophy of Augustus is recommended before descending towards Èze.
