Mandelieu-la-Napoule à Saint-Raphaël - Via Aurelia Camino

Description

This 30.2 km odyssey plunges you into the heart of the Esterel massif, where the flamboyant red of the volcanic rock contrasts sharply with the Mediterranean azure. With 692m of ascent and 702m of descent, this approximately 8.5-hour trek is one of the most spectacular sections of the Via Aurelia, linking the Napoule castle to the shores of Saint-Raphaël. Leaving Mandelieu, the path rises toward the Col de Notre-Dame, offering a unique contemplative perspective over the maritime vastness and jagged ridges. You will traverse wild scrubland dotted with strawberry trees, a landscape that has witnessed centuries of pilgrims journeying toward the sanctuary of Saint-Honorat. Arriving at the Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Victoire marks the end of a physically demanding but spiritually rejuvenating stage.

Difficultés

The effort is sustained with 692m of elevation gain spread over stony paths that can be slippery in dry weather. The almost total lack of shade and the heat reflection from the red rocks make this stage grueling in the summer. There are no resupply points between Mandelieu and the entrance to Saint-Raphaël-Agay.

Conseils

Pack at least 3 liters of water per person before leaving Mandelieu. Get your credential stamped at the Saint-Raphaël tourist office or at the basilica. If you are too tired, a coastal path variant (with less elevation gain) is available, though it is longer.
