Fontvieille à Arles - Via Aurelia Camino

Description

This final 10.7 km stretch of the Via Aurelia provides a peaceful and contemplative transition towards Arles, the historic crossroads of pilgrimage routes. With a gentle elevation gain of 51m and a loss of 52m, this 2.5-hour walk winds through olive groves and limestone landscapes that once inspired Van Gogh. Leaving Fontvieille, the silhouette of the famous windmills bids you farewell as you approach the Roman remains of the Barbegal aqueduct. Entering Arles feels like a walk through history, leading you to the Alyscamps necropolis, where the spiritual atmosphere marks the perfect conclusion to this Provençal journey before joining the Via Tolosana.

Difficultés

The physical effort is minimal due to the very low elevation gain of 51m, making this an easy and relaxing day. The main challenge is the limited shade as you approach the urban outskirts of Arles, which can be hot in summer. Be mindful of traffic when walking on the short road sections leading into the city center.

Conseils

Take the opportunity to have your credential stamped at the Arles Tourist Office or the Saint-Trophime Church upon arrival. A short detour to the nearby Montmajour Abbey is highly recommended for its spiritual and architectural beauty. Ensure you fill your water bottles in Fontvieille, as there are no public fountains until you reach the outskirts of Arles.
