Villeneuve-Loubet à Roquebrune-sur-Argens in 3 days - Via Aurelia Camino

Description

This 66.6 km journey, spread over three demanding walking days, takes you through the heart of the Estérel, between the azure sea and the flaming red volcanic rocks. With a positive altitude gain of 1238m and a loss of 1433m, this route connects the medieval fortress of Villeneuve-Loubet to the majestic Roquebrune rock, passing through historic Mandelieu-la-Napoule and wild mountain passes. Under the patronage of Saint James, you will walk through fragrant scrubland, cork oak forests, and remnants of the ancient Via Aurelia, offering a total spiritual disconnection. The panoramas of the Mediterranean from the Estérel ridges provide a moment of deep contemplation before descending into the peaceful Var valleys towards the imposing Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul church.

Difficultés

The physical demand is high with 1238m of climbing, especially during the Estérel crossing where stony climbs can be exhausting under the sun. Stages are long (around 22 km per day) and require excellent endurance, as shade and water points are scarce between Théoule-sur-Mer and the final destination.

Conseils

Carry at least 3 liters of water per day, as the Estérel massif is very dry with no fountains. Be sure to get your credential stamped at the Roquebrune tourist office or the Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul church, and check forest access restrictions in summer due to fire risks.
