Villefranche-sur-Mer à Théoule-sur-Mer in 3 days - Via Aurelia Camino

Description

This majestic 85.4 km traverse from Villefranche-sur-Mer to Théoule-sur-Mer spans three days of rare intensity between the sea and the mountains. After leaving the bay, pilgrims climb towards Mont Boron before crossing Nice and its Baroque heritage, then heading inland through the famous perched village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence. With 2,487m of elevation gain and 2,649m of loss, the route alternates between the steep trails of the Estérel massif and coastal paths steeped in history, such as the remains of ancient Romanesque chapels. The journey reaches its spiritual peak during moments of solitude facing the vastness of the Mediterranean, offering roughly 22 hours of contemplative walking through the scents of maritime pines and garrigue.

Difficultés

The effort is sustained with nearly 2,500m of elevation gain, requiring excellent physical condition to manage the three stages. Sections in the Estérel can be grueling due to high sun exposure and technical rocky ground that puts pressure on the knees during descents. Provisions are easy to find in urban areas but become scarce once committed to the forest massifs.

Conseils

Plan for at least 3 liters of water per day, especially when crossing isolated natural areas between Biot and Mandelieu. Don't forget to have your credential stamped at the Sainte-Réparate Cathedral in Nice or at the town hall in Saint-Paul-de-Vence. For the best experience, start your days at dawn to enjoy the cool air and the low light over the sea.
