Villefranche-sur-Mer à Mouans-Sartoux in 3 days - Via Aurelia Camino

Description

This monumental 60.6 km journey, spread over three days of hiking, takes you from the Azurean shores of Villefranche-sur-Mer to the horticultural lands of Mouans-Sartoux. With a positive altitude gain of 2039m and a loss of 2248m, this section of the Via Aurelia offers a spectacular immersion between sea and mountains, crossing the heights of Nice and the foothills of the Alps. Pilgrims will encounter profound historical heritage, including the Roman ruins of Cimiez, forest trails overlooking the Var river, and ancient Provencal chapels dedicated to Saint James. The ascent to the Plateau de la Justice and the descent into the Var valley mark an intense spiritual transition, where the Mediterranean sparkle gradually gives way to the serenity of oak and pine forests. This is a demanding route requiring true resilience, rewarded by 360-degree panoramas ranging from snowy peaks to the blue horizon.

Difficultés

The main challenge lies in the accumulation of 2039m of ascent over often steep and rocky terrain. Managing effort is crucial during the urban crossing of Nice which, despite the asphalt, puts pressure on joints before tackling the steep slopes of the hinterland. The crossing of the Var valley can be particularly exposed to wind and sun, with limited shade on certain segments.

Conseils

Plan strategic stops to stamp your credential at the Saint-Jacques church in Nice and the Abbey of Roseland. Be sure to refill water bottles before leaving urban areas, as supply points become scarce in the hills between Saint-Jeannet and Mouans-Sartoux. An intermediate stop in Gattières is highly recommended to balance the effort.
