Roquebrune-Cap-Martin à Pégomas in 3 days - Via Aurelia Camino

Description

This monumental 84.7 km stretch, typically completed over three days, leads you from the balconies of the Riviera to the fragrant hills of Pégomas, featuring 2969m of ascent and 3196m of descent. After leaving the ancient olive trees of Roquebrune, the path overlooks Monaco via the Trophée d'Auguste in La Turbie before descending towards Nice and its iconic Promenade des Anglais. Pilgrims then head towards the artistic village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence to reach the Loup Valley, passing numerous oratories and the historic Notre-Dame d'Espérance chapel. Between the turquoise Mediterranean and limestone peaks, this stage offers a deep spiritual immersion, bridging historical coastal cities with wild scrubland trails. With approximately 25 hours of walking, this route invites contemplation of the Roman and medieval heritage of the Via Aurelia.

Difficultés

The effort is demanding with nearly 3000m of cumulative elevation gain over varied terrain, alternating between urban asphalt and steep rocky paths. The 3196m descent is very taxing on the knees, especially during technical sections near La Turbie and the Cannes hinterland. Sun exposure is constant on the ridges, and supply points are scarce in the forested areas between Vence and Pégomas.

Conseils

Walking poles are essential to protect your joints during the steep descents. You can get your credential stamped at Saint-Rémy church in Roquebrune or Nice Cathedral. For a spiritual break, consider staying in Saint-Paul-de-Vence or La Colle-sur-Loup before starting the final wild section.
