This masterful 79.0 km journey on the Via Aurelia takes you from the shores of the Riviera to the scenic balconies of the Grasse hinterland. Between Roquebrune-Cap-Martin and Grasse, you will tackle a positive elevation gain of 2835m and a loss of 2976m, requiring approximately 22 to 24 hours of walking over three intense days. Walking along the ancient Via Julia Augusta, you will pass through exceptional sites such as La Turbie with its Trophy of Augustus and the heights of Èze, before descending into the land of perfumes through scrubland and ancient olive groves. This section, steeped in ancient spirituality, reveals discreet oratories and the imposing Notre-Dame-du-Puy Cathedral upon arrival, a true beacon for pilgrims. The atmosphere oscillates between the azure blue of the coast and the contemplative silence of the Provençal hills.
The physical challenge is significant, with nearly 3000m of cumulative elevation gain on often steep and rocky terrain. The climbs to the perched villages are demanding, especially under the Mediterranean heat which can make the effort taxing on exposed sections of the scrubland. The length of the stages requires excellent management of endurance and hydration, as shade is rare on the ridges.
Prepare a substantial water supply before leaving La Turbie and Vence, as springs are rare at high altitudes. Be sure to have your credential stamped at Grasse Cathedral to mark the end of this major stage. For an authentic rest, prioritize pilgrim welcomes or small gîtes in the Vence hinterland.
