This magisterial 97.7 km crossing through the heart of inland Provence connects Pourrières to Les Baux-de-Provence over three days of spiritual journeying. Featuring 1209m of ascent and 1476m of descent, you will walk in the shadow of the iconic Sainte-Victoire Mountain before crossing the Arbois plateau and the foothills of the Alpilles. The route, rich in Roman and medieval history, passes through soulful towns such as Puyloubier and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, offering approximately 25 hours of contemplative walking. Between AOC Provence vineyards, fragrant scrubland, and ancient olive groves, the spirit of Saint James is revealed in the silhouette of roadside oratories and the majesty of the white rocks of the Val d'Enfer.
The effort is sustained with an average of over 30 km per day and technical sections in the limestone massifs. The 1476m of descent puts significant strain on the joints, while sun exposure on the plateaus can be grueling during the summer months.
Carry significant water reserves between villages, as springs are rare on the Alpilles ridges. Be sure to have your credential stamped at the Saint-Rémy Tourist Office before the final ascent towards the Les Baux plateau.
