Pourrières à Fontvieille in 3 days - Via Aurelia Camino

Description

This 104.7 km journey, completed over three challenging days of walking, takes you from the foot of the Sainte-Victoire mountain to the gates of the Alpilles, with 1293m of ascent and 1571m of descent. Departing from Pourrières, you will cross the Cengle plateau before reaching Aix-en-Provence, its Saint-Sauveur cathedral and ancient fountains, key stops for any pilgrim. The path then winds through the Provençal garrigue, passing through Éguilles and the charming village of Saint-Cannat, offering panoramic views of the Luberon. The final stretch towards Fontvieille introduces a landscape of white limestone and olive trees, steeped in Roman history and the spirit of Provençal literature. It is a demanding yet deeply spiritual section, where the golden light of Provence guides your steps toward Arles.

Difficultés

Covering over 100 km in three days requires great endurance, especially since the 1293m of elevation gain includes steep climbs on rocky terrain. Sun exposure is almost constant on the limestone plateaus, and shade is scarce between Saint-Cannat and Fontvieille. Water management is critical on this section, which is particularly arid during the summer months.

Conseils

Ensure you get your credential stamped at Aix-en-Provence Cathedral, an essential historical stop. For supplies, take advantage of the local markets in Saint-Cannat; beyond this point, water sources become scarce until you approach the Alpilles. A contemplative break near the Montmajour Abbey (shortly before Fontvieille) will greatly enrich your spiritual experience.
