Pégomas à Le Thoronet in 3 days - Via Aurelia Camino

Description

This 93.5 km spiritual odyssey takes you from the Grasse basin to the sacred heart of the Cistercian order, requiring approximately 24 hours of walking over three days. Leaving Pégomas, you will cross the Estérel and Maures massifs, alternating between cork oak forests and fragrant Var scrubland. The route crosses several rivers such as the Argens and passes through historic towns like Lorgues, rich in medieval oratories and chapels. With 1465 m of ascent and 1296 m of descent, the pilgrim is invited to deep meditation before the vastness of the Provençal landscapes. The arrival at Le Thoronet Abbey, a 'wonder of the world' for its architectural purity, marks an unforgettable spiritual climax on the Via Aurelia.

Difficultés

The main challenge lies in the accumulation of fatigue over 93.5 km and the cumulative 1465 m of elevation gain, particularly during steep climbs through forest massifs. Water management is crucial, as some scrubland sections are highly exposed to the sun and far from any supply points. The stony paths of the Maures can be slippery in both dry and wet weather.

Conseils

Plan a stop in Lorgues to have your credential stamped at the tourist office or in one of the collegiate churches. Le Thoronet Abbey sometimes offers specific pilgrim accommodation (book in advance) for total immersion in Cistercian silence. A good reserve of 2 to 3 liters of water is essential for the forest crossings between Bagnols-en-Forêt and Le Muy.
