Monaco à Mandelieu-la-Napoule in 3 days - Via Aurelia Camino

Description

This epic 84.8 km journey over three days takes you through the heart of the Riviera, balancing coastal elegance with rugged mountain terrain. Featuring 2421m of ascent and 3075m of descent, the pilgrim departs Monaco to climb the ridges overlooking Nice before descending toward the Siagne river in Mandelieu. Along the way, the Santiago heritage is revealed through historic chapels like the Chapelle de la Miséricorde and ancient oratories scattered across the hills of Antibes. With approximately 24 hours of walking time, these trails alternate between the deep blue Mediterranean views and the aromatic scrubland. The route through perched villages and limestone paths offers a unique blend of spiritual reflection and physical challenge on the Aurelian Way.

Difficultés

The physical demand is high with a total ascent of 2421m, including steep climbs leaving Monaco and through the Nice hinterland. The significant descent of 3075m puts heavy strain on the knees, particularly on technical downhill sections toward Mandelieu. Sun exposure is constant on the rocky ridges, and water points are scarce in some forested stretches.

Conseils

Be sure to get your credential stamped at the Sainte-Dévote church in Monaco before starting. Carry a significant water supply for the scrubland sections and take advantage of the many pilgrim-friendly accommodations in Nice for your first stop. While a coastal path variant exists, the original GR653A offers more spiritual vistas from the high ridges.
