This magisterial 71.3 km journey, completed over three days of intense walking, connects the Principality of Monaco to the perfume capital of Grasse, featuring 2268m of ascent and 2828m of descent. The pilgrim rises above the Riviera via the 'Balcons de la Côte d'Azur', passing through historic sites such as La Turbie and its Trophy of Augustus before descending towards the medieval streets of Vence. Trekking between sea and mountains, you will encounter ancient Romanesque chapels and oratories dedicated to Saint James amidst the scrubland and pine forests. This section offers a profound spiritual dimension, where coastal splendor gives way to the silent contemplation of the Pre-Alps, ending solemnly at the Cathedral of Notre-Dame-du-Puy in Grasse.
The effort is demanding with 2268m of elevation gain, particularly during the initial climb to La Turbie and the crossing of the rugged inland terrain. The technical descents (2828m negative) are hard on the knees, especially on stony paths. Sun exposure is high on the ridges, and supply points become sparse once you leave the coastline.
Plan stays in La Turbie and Vence to balance the distance; don't forget to have your credential stamped at Vence Cathedral. Many water points are available in the perched villages, but carry at least 2 liters in summer. In Grasse, visit the historic center to discover the traces of the former bishopric linked to the pilgrimage.
