Menton à Pégomas in 3 days - Via Aurelia Camino

Description

This initial 88.5 km stretch of the Via Aurelia takes you from the Italian border to the fragrant hinterland of Grasse, featuring a demanding total ascent of 3202m over approximately 3 days. Leaving Menton, the route climbs towards the iconic perched villages of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin and La Turbie, offering breathtaking views of the Mediterranean. The path winds between Riviera balconies and the foothills of the Maritime Alps, passing historic landmarks such as the Trophy of Augustus and the medieval streets of Eze and Vence. This spiritual journey between sea and mountains invites deep contemplation at the many Baroque chapels and ancient oratories found along the way to Pégomas. Each step through this rugged landscape reflects the ancient pilgrimage tradition, blending physical challenge with Mediterranean serenity.

Difficultés

With over 3200m of elevation gain and loss over three days, this section is physically demanding, especially on the joints during technical descents. The climbs towards La Turbie and the limestone plateaus above Nice require peak fitness, particularly given the strong Mediterranean sun. Water management is critical, as several stretches through the scrubland (garrigue) between villages offer little shade or direct access to springs.

Conseils

Be sure to get your credential stamped at the Monastery of Cimiez in Nice, a significant spiritual site along the way. We recommend starting your days at dawn to avoid the heat and enjoy the sunrise over Cap Ferrat from the upper trails. For accommodation, look for pilgrim-friendly spots in Vence, a perfect artistic and historical stopover before reaching Pégomas.
