This 95.0 km Mediterranean odyssey, with over 3,200m of elevation gain, offers a spectacular immersion between the Alpine foothills and the azure coast. Starting from Menton, the city of lemons, the pilgrim rises towards Roquebrune-Cap-Martin and crosses passes overlooking Monaco before reaching the perched villages of Eze and La Turbie, where the Trophy of Augustus stands as a Roman vestige. The path skirts limestone ridges, descends into Nice to honor the Sainte-Réparate Cathedral, and winds through the hinterland hills via Vence before reaching the port of Cannes. Over these three days of intense walking, the spirit of Saint James blends with the scents of the scrubland and ancient olive trees, offering silent contemplation facing the vast sea.
With 3,222m of ascent and descent concentrated over three days, the effort is sustained, particularly during the climb to La Turbie and the mountain passes. Heat can be overwhelming on south-facing slopes, and some rocky paths require constant vigilance for your joints. Managing your effort is crucial over this 95 km distance, which alternates between steep climbs and technical descents.
Remember to stamp your credential at the Sainte-Dévote church in Monaco or at the Nice Cathedral. Water is available in the villages, but carry a large supply between Eze and Nice. For a unique spiritual experience, stop at the Rosary Chapel decorated by Matisse in Vence.
