Mandelieu-la-Napoule à Lorgues in 3 days - Via Aurelia Camino

Description

This major 75.8 km crossing in the heart of Provence takes you from the Bay of Cannes to the vineyards of the Var region in approximately 19 hours of walking. Leaving Mandelieu, you will cross the majestic Esterel massif with its iconic red rocks before reaching the Argens valley and the historic towns of Fréjus and Draguignan. The route, featuring an ascent of 1279m and a descent of 1103m, winds through stone pine forests, olive groves, and the first Cistercian influences. Following the ancient Via Aurelia, pilgrims encounter a rich sacred heritage, including Saint-Léonce Cathedral and rural chapels hidden in the scrubland. Arriving in Lorgues, a town of character, provides a peaceful spiritual conclusion beneath the gaze of the Saint-Martin Collegiate Church.

Difficultés

The effort is significant with 1279m of elevation gain, especially during the crossing of the Esterel where shade is scarce and the rock is abrasive. The length of the journey (75.8 km) requires excellent endurance management over three days, with isolated sections between Fréjus and Draguignan. Crossing the mountain passes can be taxing under intense Mediterranean heat.

Conseils

Plan for significant water reserves before entering the Esterel massif, as there are no supply points there. Remember to have your credential stamped at Fréjus Cathedral, a major milestone on the way. In Lorgues, the Saint-Charbel monastery or local pilgrim hostels offer well-deserved rest for weary travelers.
