This 56.2 km journey over three days starting from the monumental Trophy of Augustus in La Turbie offers a spectacular immersion between the sea and the mountains. Pilgrims leave the Riviera heights to venture into the Grasse hinterland, tackling 1996m of ascent and 2364m of descent through limestone massifs and oak forests. Along the way, spirituality emerges through ancient chapels and perched villages such as Èze or Saint-Paul-de-Vence, true medieval gems. This demanding route, requiring approximately 16 to 18 hours of actual walking, invites contemplation of the vast Mediterranean before reaching the peaceful olive groves of Opio.
The effort is intense with nearly 2000m of elevation gain spread over often rocky and steep paths that are taxing for the knees during descents. Sun exposure is high on the Riviera ridges, and shade is scarce until reaching the more wooded valleys inland. Breaking the route into three stages is essential given the distance and the technical nature of certain stony sections.
Plan for a significant water supply, as refill points are far apart between the perched villages. Don't forget to have your credential stamped at Saint-Michel church in La Turbie before starting and take advantage of the many Romanesque chapels for a meditative break. A stop in Saint-Paul-de-Vence is recommended to admire the medieval architecture before the final push towards Opio.
