La Turbie à Grasse in 3 days - Via Aurelia Camino

Description

This 70.6 km masterclass on the Via Aurelia connects the Roman city of La Turbie to the perfume capital, Grasse, over three days of intense hiking. With a cumulative ascent of 2268m and a descent of 2706m, the path winds between Mediterranean balconies and the foothills of the Prealps. You will passage through iconic hilltop villages like Èze and La Gaude, cross the Var River, and witness Romanesque treasures such as the Vence Cathedral. The route, steeped in medieval pilgrimage history, alternates between fragrant scrubland and oak forests, offering a spiritual journey against the backdrop of the sea. Upon reaching the historic center of Grasse, you will have completed one of the most demanding and beautiful sections of the Southern French Way.

Difficultés

The main challenge lies in the cumulative 2268m of elevation gain on often rocky and brittle limestone terrain. The descent to the Var river and the subsequent climb towards the Baous of Saint-Jeannet require significant stamina, especially under the hot Riviera sun. The sections between Vence and Grasse are long, demanding careful pacing and water management.

Conseils

Plan overnight stays in Vence and Saint-Jeannet to split the effort and enjoy the local heritage. Be sure to get your credential stamped at Vence Cathedral, the smallest in France, and refill water bottles at village fountains. An early morning start is highly recommended to avoid the midday heat on the ridge paths.
