Grasse à Le Thoronet in 3 days - Via Aurelia Camino

Description

This 99.2 km passage through the wild Var region requires approximately 25 hours of walking over three days of pure contemplation. Moving away from the medieval city of Grasse, the perfume capital, you will bridge an ascent of 1601m and a descent of 1512m through the Provençal backcountry. The route crosses iconic sites such as the perched village of Callian, the Saint-Cassien lake, and the vast forests of Dracénie before reaching the Cistercian jewel of Thoronet Abbey. Between ancient oratories hidden in the scrubland and fragrant pine forests, this section of the Via Aurelia offers a deep spiritual immersion to the sound of cicadas. This is a true homecoming for the pilgrim, far from the coastal bustle, walking in the footsteps of ancient Roman and medieval travelers.

Difficultés

With 1601m of elevation gain, this stage is classified as difficult due to its length and the rugged terrain of eastern Provence. The climbs to hilltop villages and the crossing of isolated forest areas require excellent endurance, especially in the summer heat. Supplies are limited between the villages of Callian and Lorgues, making water autonomy crucial.

Conseils

Plan a spiritual stop at Thoronet Abbey to have your credential stamped in a place of absolute simplicity. Remember to fill up on water in Fayence or Seillans as springs are rare on the limestone plateaus. For accommodation, book in advance in the 'gîtes d'étape' or guest houses of the Dracénie region.
