Èze à Biot in 3 days - Via Aurelia Camino

Description

This exceptional 51.9 km journey through the heart of the French Riviera takes you from cliffside villages to historic Provençal centers of art. Following the foothills with an ascent of 1,851m and a descent of 2,047m, this segment requires approximately 15 hours of walking between the Mediterranean and the Alps' first peaks. The path connects landmarks such as La Turbie's Roman trophy and the medieval old town of Nice, finally reaching the hilltop village of Biot, known for its glassblowers and Sainte-Marie-Madeleine church. From the Villefranche pass to the crossing of the Paillon river, this section offers a profound spiritual dimension, blending coastal contemplation with quiet moments in baroque chapels.

Difficultés

The effort is sustained with over 1,800m of elevation gain, including steep climbs on rocky paths that can be slippery in wet weather. The total descent of 2,047m towards the coast puts significant strain on the knees, and navigating through dense urban areas like Nice requires extra attention to markers. Sun exposure is high on the ridges, with very little shade until you reach the wooded areas surrounding Biot.

Conseils

Plan to spread this stage over three days, with recommended stops in Nice and Cagnes-sur-Mer to manage your energy levels. Be sure to get your credential stamped at the Sainte-Réparate Cathedral in Nice, a key pilgrimage site on the Via Aurelia. Regarding water, use the public fountains in Old Nice, as the balcony trail sections can be very dehydrating during the summer months.
