Cannes à Le Thoronet in 3 days - Via Aurelia Camino

Description

This 87.0 km journey over three days takes you from the Mediterranean shores to the sacred silence of the Var hinterland, with an ascent of 1448m and a descent of 1269m. Starting from Cannes, you head west through the red volcanic rocks of the Esterel massif before reaching the Argens plain and the Provencal vineyards. The trail meanders through umbrella pines and fragrant scrubland, passing through Roquebrune-sur-Argens and the foothills of the Maures toward the Cistercian jewel of Thoronet Abbey. It is a deep spiritual immersion where the sea's murmur gives way to the architectural purity of the 'purest of the three sisters of Provence.' Expect around 22 hours of walking to complete this demanding but magnificent section.

Difficultés

The effort is sustained with 1448m of positive elevation, especially when crossing the Esterel hills where the terrain can be stony and slippery. The average daily distance of 29 km requires excellent endurance, particularly under the Provencal heat which can be overwhelming in the unshaded areas between Fréjus and Lorgues.

Conseils

Have your credential stamped at Saint-Léonce Cathedral in Fréjus before tackling the plain. Carry a significant supply of water for the Esterel crossing and book your accommodation at Thoronet Abbey in advance to experience the Compline service with the nuns.
