Cagnes-sur-Mer à Saint-Raphaël in 3 days - Via Aurelia Camino

Description

This majestic 79.4 km journey takes you from the Azure coast to the fiery red rocks of the Estérel massif, with an estimated walking time of 22 hours over three days. Leaving the medieval streets of Haut-de-Cagnes, you will pass through Antibes and its cathedral, the wooded hills of Vallauris, and the wild trails leading toward Cannes and Saint-Raphaël. With 1781m of positive and 1969m of negative elevation gain, the path undulates between sparkling coastlines, fragrant scrubland, and isolated forest tracks. This section offers a profound spiritual experience, highlighted by the Notre-Dame de la Garoupe chapel and breathtaking views of the Lérins Islands. Between the bustling ports and the silent Estérel ridges, pilgrims find a unique balance between historical heritage and raw Mediterranean nature.

Difficultés

The effort is significant with 1781m of elevation gain, especially during the crossing of the Estérel massif where climbs on forest tracks can be grueling under the sun. The 79.4 km distance requires great endurance, and some rocky passages between Théoule and Saint-Raphaël demand careful footing. Water points and shops are scarce in the heart of the massif, making water autonomy essential for long stretches.

Conseils

Remember to get your credential stamped at Antibes Cathedral or the Notre-Dame d'Espérance church in Cannes. Carry at least 3 liters of water per day for the wild Estérel section, as there are no water points between Théoule and Agay. While a coastal path variant exists, the historical GR route via the ridges offers the most spiritual and panoramic views.
