Cagnes-sur-Mer à Roquebrune-sur-Argens in 3 days - Via Aurelia Camino

Description

This epic 83.4 km journey takes you from the Riviera coast to the foothills of the Esterel, requiring approximately 21 hours of walking over three days. Leaving Cagnes-sur-Mer, you climb towards hilltop villages before diving into the silence of cork oak forests and red volcanic ridges, with 1790m of ascent and 1977m of descent. The path is dotted with spiritual treasures such as the Chapel of Notre-Dame de Protection and the Roman ruins of Fréjus, a major former episcopal city. Pilgrims traverse contrasting landscapes, from the banks of the Siagne to the wild panoramas of the massif, before spotting the iconic silhouette of the Rock of Roquebrune overlooking the Argens. This stage marks a profound transition where the coastal bustle fades into the majesty of wild Provence and solitary meditation.

Difficultés

The effort is sustained with 1790m of elevation gain, including sharp climbs in the Esterel massif which is often exposed to high heat. Forest sections can be tricky after rain, and some stretches between Mandelieu and Fréjus are isolated, with no supply points for several kilometers.

Conseils

Get your credential stamped at Saint-Léonce Cathedral in Fréjus, a major historical site. Carry a significant water supply (at least 3L) for the Esterel crossing as natural springs are non-existent, and check massif access during summer (fire hazard).
