Brignoles à Coudoux in 3 days - Via Aurelia Camino

Description

This majestic 89.0 km journey through the heart of Limestone Provence connects the city of the Counts of Provence to the gates of the Aix region over three days of contemplative walking. With a total ascent of 1696m and a descent of 1739m, this section of the Via Aurelia leads you from Brignoles to Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume, home to the third tomb of Christendom, before crossing the iconic Sainte-Victoire mountain. You will traverse fragrant scrublands, renowned vineyards, and pine forests, passing through charming villages like Puyloubier and Le Tholonet before reaching Coudoux. Expect approximately 24 hours of walking to fully embrace the spirituality of these historic lands, punctuated by baroque oratories and ridge paths offering breathtaking views. It is a sensory pilgrimage through Provence’s unique light, where Roman history meets medieval devotion.

Difficultés

The effort is significant with 1,696m of elevation gain spread over long daily distances, requiring excellent stamina. Sun exposure is constant on the limestone plateaus and the ridges of Sainte-Victoire, making the heat a serious factor. Some sections on rocky and unstable ground require careful footwork to avoid ankle strain.

Conseils

Be sure to get your credential stamped at the Basilica of Saint-Maximin, a major spiritual landmark on the route. Carry a significant water supply (at least 3L in summer) as refill points are scarce between Saint-Maximin and Le Tholonet. A contemplative stop at the Sainte-Victoire Priory offers an exceptional moment of peace before the descent towards Aix-en-Provence.
