This 51.9 km journey through the heart of authentic Provence connects the circular village of Bras to the ancient city of Aix-en-Provence over three days of contemplative walking. With an elevation gain of 959m and a loss of 1071m, the path stretches for approximately 13 hours between Var vineyards and the foothills of the Montagne Sainte-Victoire. You will pass through historical sites such as Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume, home to Mary Magdalene's basilica, before crossing the Cengle plateau. The spiritual atmosphere heightens as you encounter rural oratories and priories scattered across the scrubland, offering a striking contrast between the silence of the pine forests and the artistic vibrancy of Aix. It is a demanding yet rewarding route where the shade of evergreen oaks guides the pilgrim's steps towards the city of a thousand fountains.
The effort is significant with 959m of ascent, including steep climbs on rocky terrain often exposed to the direct sun. The daily stages are long, requiring good stamina management over three consecutive days, particularly when crossing isolated scrubland areas with no shade.
Carry plenty of water as supply points are rare between Saint-Maximin and Aix; be sure to get your credential stamped at the Basilica of Saint Mary Magdalene. A spiritual break at the Prieuré de Victoire is highly recommended for its exceptional panoramic views of the region.
