This magisterial 67.7 km crossing through the heart of Provence connects the thermal city of Aix-en-Provence to the foot of the Alpilles over three days of walking (approximately 17 hours total). With an ascent of 463m and a descent of 635m, the route leaves the bustle of Aix behind to immerse you in the landscapes of Cassigny and the Touloubre valley. Walking towards Éguilles and then Saint-Cannat, pilgrims tread on land steeped in Roman and medieval history, where discreet oratories and wine estates pace the journey. The arrival towards Paradou, through olive groves and fragrant scrubland, offers a unique contemplative dimension facing the silhouette of Les Baux-de-Provence. It is a spiritual journey between shadow and light, where Templar heritage and the spirit of Mistral converge.
The effort is sustained by the cumulative distance of nearly 68 km, requiring good endurance management over three days. The 463m elevation gain is moderate, but prolonged exposure to the sun in the plains and the mistral wind can weaken the walker. Some paved sections leaving Aix and near Lambesc require extra vigilance.
Carry significant water supplies between Saint-Cannat and Lambesc, as refueling points are scarce in the heart of the scrubland. Be sure to have your credential stamped at Saint-Sauveur Cathedral in Aix before departing. A stop at Silvacane Abbey, though slightly off the path, will enrich your spiritual and architectural quest.
